Using Avenza Maps
Updated: 4 days ago
Avenza Maps is available for iPhone and Android. Download your maps before you leave so they are ready to view offline.
In Avenza Maps, get maps from the Map Store. Importing your own map files requires a paid plan; check the current options in the app before importing.
Quick start in writing
1. Open Avenza Maps on your phone and sign in to your Map Store account, or create an account.
2. Choose Discover to open the Map Store. Search by place or map title, open the listing, and check its coverage, publisher, edition and price. Choose Free or the displayed price and follow the download steps.
3. Open the downloaded map from Library. Finish downloading while you still have an internet connection, and check that the map opens before leaving.
4. On the map, tap the GPS icon to show your location. A blue dot marks your position and the surrounding circle indicates accuracy. If the app says “Not on map,” your location is outside that map’s coverage. Enable location services if your position is unavailable.
5. To import a compatible map file with an eligible plan, save it to your device or cloud storage. In Avenza Maps choose the plus/import control, select the storage location, and select the file. Keep the app open until importing finishes.
These steps follow Avenza’s written guides linked above. For file imports, use Avenza’s Getting Started with Custom Maps guide below.
