What to expect as a volunteer groomer operator.

Is this paid work?

It is a volunteer role. Once you finish training and are certified to groom independently, the club reimburses mileage between home and the groomer at the federal mileage rate. The current federal mileage rate is 76 cents per mile.

Do I need experience?

No prior grooming experience is required. Bring a strong work ethic, basic mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn. Machinery or snowmobile experience helps. As part of our trainee groomer program, the club arranges enrollment in the annual U.S. Forest Service sawyer qualification course (chainsaw). Operators must obtain current National Sawyer Certification for chainsaw use.

What does training involve?

Mostly hands-on work in the field and grooming barn, with an experienced operator at least one day a week. Training may take one or two sessions for a very experienced operator, or a full season for a beginner. You learn operation, maintenance and troubleshooting on our PistenBully PB 100 and PB 400.

How much time will I commit?

After training, plan on one day a week, arranged at the start of the season. A shift usually lasts 6–10 hours. Snow and weather may require early mornings, evenings, late nights or weekends.

What are the physical demands?

Expect cold, harsh weather and long hours. You should be able to lift up to 50 pounds and have the stamina for a full shift.

What will I do?

Groom trails, perform routine equipment maintenance and help keep trails safe. Training covers leveling and compacting snow to suit trail and snow conditions.

Will I work alone?

Often, once trained. Stay in touch with the team using cell phones and satellite communications equipment. Share safety information courteously with trail users.

What if something goes wrong?

Follow your training and report problems immediately to your supervisor and team. Each snowcat has a first aid kit in its toolbox. Use required protective equipment and never operate when unwell or fatigued.
